Poverty Alleviation

Rescue Foundation works mostly in rural farming and fishing communities. In the farming communities RFG has worked with both men and women to expand their farms by one or two acres at a time.

It has also brought the Ministry of Agriculture Extension officers to teach the farmers multiple cropping . Thus on the same piece of land they harvest three crops in a year instead of one and increase their earnings three fold. The women’s cooperatives are also taught food preservation where they convert their cassava to gari (a local staple), tomatoes to tomato puree and tomato jam., pepper to pepper puree, groundnuts to groundnut paste and roasted groundnuts . Thus they preserve food for their own consumption and sell the rest to get money for other essential commodities. Through this project those who work hard are making money to improve their lives. One woman has built herself a 3-bedroom house and another has sent a child to secondary school. The government has recognized the efforts of the women and given them training and support to start planting new crops like cabbage, carrots and onions. Our women’s unions have won government’s Best Farmer Awards either as individual’s or as groups. Since 2005 we have established a gari factory to serve 4 communities and one food processing factory to serve three communities. We have also built modern kilns for one fishing community for smoking fish.
